Dr. Betty Chinyamunyamu

CEO - National Smallholder Farmers Association of Malawi (NASFAM)

Dr. Betty Chinyamunyamu is a distinguished Development Economist renowned for her expertise in crafting and executing transformative development initiatives aimed at lifting individuals out of poverty. With a focus on strategic planning, agribusiness development, policy analysis and advocacy, food security, and women's empowerment, she has amassed over two decades of experience in the field of agribusiness.  


Currently serving as the Chief Executive Officer of the National Smallholder Farmers’ Association of Malawi (NASFAM), Dr. Chinyamunyamu leads Malawi’s largest independent smallholder farmer organization, boasting a membership exceeding 130,000 farmers. Additionally, she holds the position of Director at NASFAM Commercial (NASCOMEX), the organization's commercial arm specializing in sales of value-added agricultural products.   


Beyond her executive roles, Dr. Chinyamunyamu contributes significantly to Malawi's national development agenda as a Commissioner of the Malawi National Planning Commission (NPC) and a member of the Reserve Bank of Malawi Monetary Policy Committee. She also lends her expertise to various organizations, serving as a trustee of the Economics Association of Malawi and as a Board member of the Agricultural Commodity Exchange for Africa (ACE).  


Dr. Chinyamunyamu's academic achievements underscore her commitment to excellence. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics (with distinction) from the University of Malawi, a master’s degree in Development Studies (with distinction) from the University of Cambridge (UK), and a Ph.D. from the University of Leeds (UK).
